The universal charger, a raging European debate! In January 2020, the European Commission wanted to impose the universal charger for all smartphones. But it was without counting on the veto of the giant Apple which uses the Lightning port on its iPhone and iPad. A year and a half later, the case resurfaced …

It seems that the catalog of Apple products is about to take a historic turn with the latest announcement of the European Commission on its bill to impose the universal charger, with a USB-C port as a rule of thumb. For the Apple brand, the only survivor of manufacturers to use the Lightning port, the proposed legislation calling on manufacturers and consumers to reduce their electronic waste and opt for sustainable objects, compromises a strategy that has not changed since 2012. Indeed, Apple uses this port for its iPhone, iPad, and iPod and should then modify its flagship devices.

In 2020, the brand created a barrier by preparing a defense argument for its Lightning connector and strongly opposed the introduction of this unique charger – the brand also having a strong ecological commitment in the construction of its devices (the MacBook Air is notably made with 100% recycled aluminum). But for how long will the manufacturer be able to keep its Lightning port?

WILL APPLE HAVE TO DITCH THE LIGHTNING PORT?

Currently, three connectors are used in the smartphone market: the famous Lightning used only on Apple devices, USB-C and MicroUSB. The latter is on the verge of extinction and should soon give way to USB-C. A scenario not very encouraging for Apple which, let us remember, has already given in with the iPad Pro which has been using a USB-C connector since 2018. Hence the rumors around a future big change in the coming months. A question that we can ask ourselves: will this upheaval impact the innovation capacity of the industry of smartphone manufacturers, as Apple denounces?

Unfortunately for the brand, bad news never comes alone, MEPs are already discussing something else: wireless charging … universal. It seems that yet another debate is added to this one …
