Smartphone greedy, energy-consuming applications, unrealized updates … The battery of a smartphone is often damaged by users who inadvertently shorten its life. To preserve it well, it is necessary to have some good reflexes.

 

Lithium-ion, also known as li-ion, is the main battery technology used by all recent smartphones. Although more expensive to produce, the li-ion presents, compared to traditional technologies (NiCd and NiMH), a faster recharge, which lasts longer and a higher energy density. What makes these batteries lighter and much more autonomous. In short, an almost perfect technology that combines fast charging and battery life. But these advantages know their limits. Indeed, li-ion batteries tend to age after a few years, even if you use your smartphone little. How to extend their lifespan and limit the harmful effects on the battery with small everyday actions?

CHOOSE A SUITABLE CHARGER

It might seem logical, but not all chargers are made the same. And it is precisely this difference in manufacturing that can damage your smartphone when the charger used is not the one supplied with the phone. Indeed, using the charger supplied by the manufacturer guarantees compatibility and safety criteria with your smartphone and therefore at the same time avoiding any surprises with a charger purchased from a third party. And who says charger naturally says the cable. The principle is the same. You will ideally prefer cables from the manufacturers of your smartphones. For Apple devices, for example, MFI certification ensures optimal compatibility. To check the certification of the cable you have, you can find a dedicated page on the manufacturer’s website that can help you sort your cables.

USING FAST CHARGE

In recent years, many technologies for fast charging have been developed, mostly by manufacturers themselves. The most popular is Quick Charge 4+, compatible with a majority of smartphones and developed by chipmaker Qualcomm. The giant Samsung is also largely inspired by it and developed its own: Adaptive Fast Charging, compatible with the latest Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip. Ditto for Sony and Xiaomi, which use TurboPower. In principle, they are all identical and allow loading in several stages and in just a few minutes. These fast chargers, therefore, send up to 15 to 100 watts of power to the battery, which can make it less efficient in the long run.

MAINTAIN AN IDEAL LOAD

Neither too low nor too high … Knowing the battery level of your phone will allow you to better control its charging and avoid causing the smartphone to overheat, which would be harmful to it. Indeed, fully recharging your smartphone (and leaving it plugged in beyond 100%) or letting it discharge to the end on a recurring basis can damage your battery. The infallible trick: charge your smartphone punctually to keep it charged between 20 and 80%. And if possible, avoid using your smartphone while it is charging so as not to overheat its components.

As we all know, heat is harmful to batteries that overheat when they are charging. Limit large variations in temperature because your battery is sensitive and it needs to be protected! For this, you can for example opt for accessories (thermal cover, cases …) that will make your life and that of your battery easier.

INVEST IN AN EXTERNAL BATTERY
